Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I register for an account? A: Simply click on the 'Register' link on the left menu (also indicated by the icon of a person with a plus sign on them). You'll be asked a few questions, including some demographic information that we're requiring for our public beta (don't worry, we're only using it to see what kind of people use our site, not sharing with anyone else during the beta). Once you finish completing the form, you'll get an email to confirm your account, and then you're done!

Q: How do I create a playlist? A: Once you've logged into your account, click on the 'Playlists' link on the left menu and use the 'Create Playlist' button at the top of the page. You'll be asked for a name for your playlist and whether or not you'd like the playlist to appear on your user profile page, and then you'll have your first playlist!

Q: How do I add videos to a playlist? A: From the Playlists page, click on the name of your playlist to be taken to the video management page. From there you will see a button named 'Add Video' which will give you the form you need to add a playlist.

Q: How do I invite friends to the site? A: On the left menu there is a link for 'Invitations'. Click on it and enter the email addresses of your friends so they receive a link to register an account. If they use the link you will see when they've registered for an account.

Q: How do I tell my friends where to watch a video with me? A: There are two ways to handle this. First, you can simply click the 'Play' icon on the Playlists page and copy the URL from your browser to them. Secondly, the 'Share' icon on the Playlists page will give you the URL to share with friends for the playlist you're going to watch. All they have to do is paste the link in their browser to join you.

Q: What kind of content can I use with SyncScene? A: Since this is a public beta this list will change over time, but for the moment we support YouTube and hosted video files.

Q: How do I change my username? A: At this moment we aren't supporting the ability to change your username, but if you REALLY must change it, drop us a line via the Feedback form and we'll help you out.

Q: Help, I forgot my password! A: Calm down, we've got this! From the Login page there is a link in case you've forgotten your username or password. Click it and everything will be fine, we promise (and if not, obviously send us a note so we can help).

Q: How do I upload a video to SyncScene? A: Short answer: You don't. Long answer: We aren't looking to be another video provider like YouTube or Vimeo. Instead, we want to make it easier for you to watch videos with your friends. As such, we're not going to ever be supporting uploading videos to SyncScene, instead working to support as many providers as possible.

Q: Why isn't my video working? A: There are a lot of reasons why a video might not work, ranging from the video format (if it's a hosted video file) or even YouTube not supporting embedding. Typically a video won't work because your browser simply can't connect for some reason, but not all browsers can support the same type of video file. This is why we provide the ability to link multiple versions of the same video to support different browsers. As for YouTube, if they don't support embedding there isn't much we can do about the video playing for you, you'll have to take that up with the content provider on YouTube.

Q: When are you adding an app for my mobile device? A: Probably very soon! We're already hard at work on mobile apps for Android and iOS, as well as a universal (mobile + desktop) app for Windows 10. Additionally we have plans to support many more devices over time, so stay tuned.

Q: Is your favorite color orange? A: It is not. Our favorite color is buff. Thank you for asking!

Q: Why is it called SyncScene? A: What else would you call it? One of our founders originally came up with the idea to call the system Shcreen, thinking it was a great combination of "Shared" and "Screen", but thankfully the rest of the team was able to help him see he shouldn't ever be naming products.

Q: Does SyncScene work with X? A: If 'X' in your question doesn't mean either YouTube or "hosted video files", the answer is currently "no." That being said, we're working very hard to expand that list. If you know of a service we should support, feel free to drop us a line via the feedback page and we'll take a look.

Q: Can I integrate this with my website? A: We don't currently support any integration with a website, but it hasn't been ruled out for the future.

Q: What do the viewer statuses mean in a theater? A: Viewer statuses are as follows:
- The viewer is stopped
- The viewer has paused their player
- The viewer is playing the video
- The viewer is ready to play
- The viewer is waiting for a video to load or others to finish

Q: What are the playlist types? A: We currently have the following playlist types:
Free For All (FFA) - The video will not begin until everyone agrees to play. Once begun, anyone may pause the video for everyone else. New viewers are not automatically synchronized.
Can't Stop Won't Stop (CSWS) - The video will not begin until everyone agrees to play. Once begun, nobody may pause the video. New viewers are automatically synchronized.
